In Memoriam: Dr. Collie Oudkerk
Dr. Collie Oudkerk

With deep sorrow, the Board of the Health and Educational Relief Organization (H.E.R.O.) announces the sudden passing of our beloved co-founder, former president, and treasurer, Dr. Collie Oudkerk. A devoted humanitarian, Dr. Oudkerk embodied compassion, humility, and tireless service throughout his life and work.

Originally from Guyana, Dr. Oudkerk co-founded H.E.R.O. nearly 25 years ago and played a vital role in leading medical missions that brought free, quality healthcare to thousands in underserved communities, particularly in Linden. A skilled emergency physician at Brookdale Hospital for over two decades, he was admired not only for his clinical excellence but also for his warmth, mentorship, and unwavering kindness.

Dr. Oudkerk’s journey—from graduating Erasmus Hall High School and earning an economics degree at Hamilton College, to following his true calling in medicine at Howard University—reflected his deep commitment to helping others. His colleagues, patients, and students will remember him for his brilliance, humor, and boundless heart.
Just two days before his passing, Dr. Oudkerk was still doing what he loved—caring for patients in Guyana. His life’s work speaks volumes: “The practice of medicine is the work of my life,” he once said. And indeed, it was.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. Dr. Oudkerk’s legacy lives on through the lives he touched and the mission he helped shape. We will honor his memory by continuing his work with the same compassion and dedication he so beautifully exemplified.
