The Florida A&M University (FAMU) Student Chapter of HERO, founded by Sade E. Collins, connects students with healthcare professionals to gain exposure in the healthcare field while engaging in vital public service. Our mission is to provide quality care and education to underserved populations in the Caribbean, particularly in rural and inner-city areas. We aim to raise awareness of health and educational disparities, inspire student involvement in community development, and foster connections among students, healthcare professionals, and community leaders. As a student organization, we help members become well-rounded healthcare professionals through community service and cross-cultural experiences. Our chapter currently has 30 active members, including our executive board and faculty representatives, and we benefit from our partnership with H.E.R.O. for networking and practical experience in a developing country.

Founded in 2002, the Florida State University (FSU) Chapter of HERO offers students the chance to work alongside healthcare professionals and gain practical experience in healthcare delivery. The chapter was initiated by Michelle P. Wan, now an Emergency Medicine Physician and national board member of HERO. Currently, FSU HERO includes around 30 members and a seven-member executive board, supported by an FSU faculty adviser. Its mission is to develop well-rounded professionals through cross-cultural immersion and volunteer service in the Caribbean. Students assist volunteer specialists in providing basic healthcare to underserved populations and raise awareness about health and educational disparities in the region. The chapter fosters connections among students, healthcare professionals, and community leaders. Members benefit by gaining firsthand experience in patient care while supporting HERO’s medical missions. They help organize clinics and pharmacies, enabling licensed clinicians to deliver care. This collaboration inspires a new generation of healthcare professionals who are committed to serving underserved communities worldwide.
