Investing in Education, Transforming Lives

Education

Project

The HERO Literacy Program was founded by the late Mr. Mark Cort to help disadvantaged children in Guyana achieve grade-level proficiency and promote functional literacy. He recognized that poor reading skills are closely linked to poverty and criminal activity among youth. Through his interactions with children, he saw many lacked the basic skills for a productive future. He believed that when placed in a supportive environment, children could develop the awareness needed to expand their knowledge.

Literacy Project Begins in Georgetown

On August 7, 2000, Mr. Cort launched the first summer literacy program at East Ruimveldt Secondary School in Greater Georgetown. Initially starting with about two dozen children, enrollment grew to over 100 within six weeks. By 2002, regular enrollment exceeded 200 students, prompting the initiation of adult literacy classes for parents. The program was fully funded by Mr. Cort for its first six years, after which Mr. Kenrick Cort joined as a co-sponsor, providing stipends for teachers and meals for students. The program also relocated to Central Georgetown to reach more children in need.

Sophia Joins the Literacy Project

In 2008, the program merged with HERO’s Sophia Literacy Project, which was fully funded by HERO. Held at community centers, the combined enrollment reached approximately 260 students and 18 teachers. Students received free healthcare, with referrals for additional treatment as needed. From 2009 to 2013, the program maintained an average of nearly 300 students yearly. In 2010, Mr. Kenrick Cort introduced a teacher training program and annual assessments to monitor student progress, leading to significant improvements in academic performance.

Moving Beyond Georgetown

In 2016, HERO launched a pilot project to assist students in Mocha Village and Lusignan with standardized exam preparation and expanded support for mathematics and writing. Inspired by student enthusiasm, HERO continues to evolve its educational initiatives, facilitating transformative success in the lives of many.
