Testimonials

Ashley John,

Mahatma Gandhi once said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” This insight deeply resonated with me during a recent medical mission to Guyana organized by Health and Educational Relief (HERO). I have always felt a strong urge to help others. Growing up, my parents took me to India each year to connect with our culture, often bringing clothes and toys to those in need. This spirit of giving inspired me to join the mission in Guyana, where I could use my professional training to make a difference. My time in Guyana highlighted the healthcare disparities similar to those in India. Many patients face medication shortages and high costs for inadequate care. My grandmother suffered from these issues and passed away due to a lack of proper treatment, which motivated me to help as many people as I could. Despite challenges like the heat and organizing medications, the experience was incredibly rewarding. I’m grateful to have been part of this team and intend to participate in future missions, as there is no greater joy than serving others.

While driving to one of our clinic locations outside Georgetown, the capital of Guyana, I saw a sign that read, “You are now leaving Georgetown, the Garden City.” This piqued my interest, and I soon realized the beauty surrounding me: rows of pink and white lotus flowers lining the roads. How had I overlooked such vibrant foliage? If I missed these flowers, what did it say about my awareness of the healthcare needs in underserved communities? Three years ago, when Dr. Suzanna Gim offered me the chance to join an overseas medical mission, I knew it was an opportunity I had to embrace. Our mission to Guyana surpassed my expectations; it exemplified healthcare at its best, with professionals from various fields coming together to help those in need. The local community was incredibly supportive, often bringing children of neighbors whose parents couldn't come. Our team showed great resourcefulness in overcoming challenges, including limited space and an unexpected illness affecting one member. The patients' gratitude was overwhelmingly heartwarming. Working with the team at HERO and the Guyanese people has left me with lasting positive memories, and I look forward to applying my pharmacy expertise in future opportunities to serve those in need.

During my medical mission to Guyana with HERO, I witnessed how the lack of basic necessities and health knowledge impacted the local population. One memorable moment was when a young man expressed confusion about the harmful effects of smoking, revealing how unaware he was of its dangers. The healthcare providers we collaborated with were not only supportive but also showed great dedication to serving the underserved. Their willingness to take time out of their busy schedules to help others was truly inspiring and humbling. This experience reinforced the joy of helping those in need and highlighted that giving back doesn't end with establishing a medical career. We should always strive to set new goals, as there will always be someone in need of assistance. I encourage anyone considering this trip to go for it—it's a life-changing experience.
